Warfarin Sodium is an oral anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent and treat blood clots. It works by inhibiting vitamin K-dependent clotting factors, which reduces the blood’s ability to clot.
- Contains 5 mg Warfarin Sodium per tablet
- Used for long-term anticoagulation therapy
- Reduces risk of stroke and embolism in at-risk patients
- Generic equivalent to Coumadin
- Packaged in sealed bottles for extended shelf-life (up to 3 years)
Uses / Indications
- Prevention and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary embolism (PE)
- Prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF)
- Prophylaxis for thromboembolic complications after prosthetic heart valve replacement
Dosage & Administration
- To be used strictly under medical supervision and INR monitoring
- Typically 2-5 mg orally once daily, adjusted based on INR levels
- 2 mg to 10 mg per day depending on INR results
Precautions
- Many drug and food interactions can affect Warfarin’s action
- Common interacting drugs: Aspirin, NSAIDs, antibiotics, antifungals, anticonvulsants, thyroid medications, herbal supplements (e.g., ginkgo, garlic)
- Avoid alcohol and high-vitamin K foods (like spinach, kale, broccoli)
- Bleeding (major or minor) – gums, urine, stool, brain
